Why Some SEO Companies Won't Discuss Pricing Until the Third Meeting

Published 17 February 2026

You ask how much it costs. You get a question back instead of a number. Then another meeting gets booked. This happens often enough in SEO sales that it's worth asking why.

It's one of the more irritating patterns in this industry, and I say that as someone who sits on the agency side of the table. Business owners are busy. Nobody wants to burn a third hour-long slot just to hear a figure that could have been given, roughly, in the first five minutes.

I've asked other agency owners about this directly, at industry meetups and the odd conference, and the honest answers split roughly down the middle. Half genuinely believe accurate pricing requires proper scoping first. The other half admit, usually after a drink, that delay is partly deliberate. Both groups will tell you their approach is the "right" one.

The Legitimate Reason This Happens

SEO pricing genuinely does depend on scope, and scope depends on information an agency doesn't have until they've looked properly. A Billericay solicitor's site with 40 pages and a clean technical setup needs a different quote than a Basildon e-commerce store with 4,000 product pages and a history of duplicate content issues. Quoting blind would mean either overcharging the simple case or badly underquoting the complex one.

So a short discovery call, or even a light technical scan, before pricing is not automatically a stalling tactic. Sometimes it's just accurate. We'd rather take an extra meeting and get the number right than throw out a figure and have to renegotiate it awkwardly in month two.

There's also a competitive reason some agencies are cagey early: publishing exact numbers makes it trivially easy for rivals to undercut by a token amount without doing any real comparison of scope. That's a defensible business reason, even if it's frustrating from the buyer's side of the table.

A technical scan genuinely does change pricing too, not just justify a delay. We once planned to quote a Colchester retailer a standard mid-tier package, only for a quick crawl to turn up over six hundred broken internal links left behind by a botched platform migration two years earlier. That single discovery pushed the real scope, and the real price, up considerably. Quoting before that scan would have meant badly underselling the actual work required.

We explained all of this to the client before quoting, walked them through the crawl results directly, and let them see the broken links for themselves rather than just taking our word for it. That transparency, more than the final number, is usually what turns a scoping delay from suspicious into reasonable.

The Less Legitimate Reason

Here's the part worth being blunt about: some agencies delay pricing specifically to build enough rapport and sunk time that you feel awkward walking away once the number finally lands. Three meetings in, you've invested hours, maybe you've already started imagining working together. That emotional investment makes a higher-than-expected price easier to swallow. It's a sales technique, and it works more often than it should.

If you notice a pattern of being asked to attend "just one more call" before any figure appears, and the reasons for delay feel thin, trust that instinct.

A Grays-based dentist told us she sat through three separate calls with one agency, each one promising pricing "next time," before finally being quoted a figure nearly double what two competitors had given her upfront. By that point she'd already spent close to four hours of her working week on calls alone.

What stuck with her most, she said, wasn't even the eventual price. It was how good the salesperson had been at each call — personable, attentive, seemingly invested in her business specifically. Looking back, she realised that charm had been doing a lot of work to keep her in the room rather than asking the one question that actually mattered.

Why Some SEO Companies Won't Discuss Pricing Until the Third Meeting

How to Tell the Difference

Ask directly, early, for a ballpark range even before the full scoping is done. A legitimate agency can usually give you something like "typically between £X and £Y a month for a business your size, with the exact figure depending on what we find." That's not evasive — it's honest about uncertainty while still giving you something to work with.

An agency that refuses even a rough range, insisting pricing can only be discussed once you've committed to another meeting, is managing you rather than informing you.

A Quick Test

Try this: ask what the cheapest and most expensive packages they offer look like. Any agency with a real pricing structure can answer in thirty seconds. One stalling for sales reasons will dodge, redirect, or insist "every client is different" without giving you any anchor points at all.

Watch body language on video calls too, if you're able to see it. A sudden shift in posture, a glance away from camera, a noticeably longer pause than anywhere else in the conversation — none of these prove anything on their own, but stacked together around one specific question, they're worth noticing.

What Delayed Pricing Costs You

Every extra meeting costs you time, and time is the one resource you can't claw back regardless of how the contract turns out. If you're evaluating three agencies and two give you a working range in the first conversation while one insists on dragging it to a third meeting, that's useful comparative information on its own, independent of the actual numbers involved.

  • A ballpark range in meeting one is a good sign.
  • A full, precise quote after a proper scoping call is reasonable.
  • Three meetings with zero numbers is a pattern worth questioning.

What Good Pricing Transparency Looks Like

We try to give a realistic range within the first conversation, then firm it up once we've actually looked at a prospective client's site and competitive landscape. That second step usually takes a few days, not another meeting. If the number shifts significantly from the initial range, we explain exactly why, rather than hoping nobody notices.

When you're comparing SEO pricing structures across agencies, the speed and clarity of that conversation tells you almost as much as the number itself.

We also try to put the reasoning behind a quote in writing, not just the final figure, so a client can see exactly what drove the number rather than just trusting us on it. It takes a bit longer to prepare, but it avoids the awkward feeling of a price appearing out of nowhere with no visible working behind it.

We've had prospective clients tell us afterwards that this written breakdown, more than the figure itself, was what made them comfortable signing. Nobody likes committing serious budget to a number they can't trace back to anything concrete.

If You've Already Sat Through Several Vague Meetings

If you're already a few meetings deep with no number in sight, don't be afraid to ask directly: "Can you give me a figure today, or do we need another meeting?" A straight question like that often forces a straight answer. If it doesn't, you've got your answer anyway, just not the one you were hoping for. At that point it's reasonable to go and get a quote for SEO work in Essex somewhere that will actually give you one. Life's too short to spend another afternoon on a call that was always going to end with "let's book one more meeting."

There's no shortage of agencies competing for business across Essex, which means you genuinely do have options. Use that leverage rather than feeling obligated to one particular company just because they got to you first.

The Bottom Line

Some delay in pricing is genuinely about getting the scope right, and that's fair enough. But if every conversation ends with another meeting booked and still no number, that's not caution, that's a sales process designed around your reluctance to walk away after investing time. You're allowed to ask for a range on the first call, and a decent agency will give you one.
