Most websites we audit across Essex are not held back by a lack of content or a weak brand. They are held back by plumbing. A plumber in Chelmsford or a solicitor in Colchester can have a lovely site that Google simply struggles to read, and nobody notices because the pages look fine in a browser. Technical SEO is the unglamorous work of making sure search engines, and increasingly AI assistants, can find, understand and trust what you publish.
You do not need to be a developer to check the basics. Here is what we look at first, in the order we usually look at it.
Can Google Actually Reach Your Pages?
Start with crawling and indexing, because nothing else matters if this is broken. Open Google Search Console, which is free, and look at the Pages report. It tells you which URLs are indexed and, more usefully, why others are not.
The classic disaster is a leftover noindex tag from the development stage. We have seen a Brentwood business spend months wondering why a redesign flattened its traffic, only to find the staging settings had been pushed live. Check your robots.txt file too by adding /robots.txt to your domain. If you see a line reading Disallow: / and you did not put it there deliberately, get it fixed today.
Speed and Core Web Vitals
Speed is not just a ranking nudge. It changes whether a visitor from Southend on a patchy mobile signal waits for your page or gives up. Run your key pages through PageSpeed Insights and look at the field data, the real-user numbers, rather than obsessing over the lab score.
The usual culprits are boringly consistent:
- Images uploaded at full camera resolution and squeezed down by CSS.
- Too many plugins, especially on WordPress, each loading its own scripts.
- Cheap shared hosting with slow server response times.
- Chat widgets and tracking tags that load before the content does.
Mobile First Means Mobile Only, Really
Google crawls the mobile version of your site first. If your desktop page has a full service description and the mobile version hides half of it behind tabs that do not load, you are being judged on the thinner version. Load your own site on a phone, on mobile data, and try to do what a customer would do: find a phone number, read your prices, fill in a form. If anything makes you swear, it is costing you enquiries as well as rankings.
Structure, Headings and Internal Links
Every page should have one clear main heading, sensible subheadings and a title tag that says what the page is about in plain words. It sounds basic, yet we regularly find sites where every page title is simply the business name. Take a look at your internal linking as well. Your most important service pages should be reachable within a couple of clicks from the homepage, and related pages should point to each other with descriptive anchor text rather than the word "here".
Broken links and redirect chains are the other quiet drain. A free crawler such as Screaming Frog, which handles up to 500 URLs without a licence, will list them in minutes.
Structured Data and Local Signals
Schema markup is how you tell machines, explicitly, who you are. For a local business that means LocalBusiness markup with your name, address, phone number, opening hours and service area, matching your Google Business Profile exactly. Inconsistent details, such as a Harlow address written three different ways across the web, make it harder for search engines and AI tools to feel confident about you.
Use Google's Rich Results Test to validate what you have.
What to Fix First
If you only have an afternoon, do these in order: confirm the site is indexable, fix any server errors, compress the heaviest images, check the mobile experience, and make sure every page has a unique title. If you would rather have someone else carry out the audit, our SEO service for Essex businesses starts with exactly this kind of technical review.
The Bottom Line
Technical SEO is not mysterious, and most of its wins are cheap. Get the foundations right and every piece of content you publish afterwards has a fair chance of being found. Skip them and you are pouring water into a leaking bucket.
