Structured Data for Local Businesses: A Plain English Guide

Structured data has a reputation for being technical and dull, and the second part is fair. But the idea behind it is simple, and for a local business it can remove a surprising amount of confusion. Here is what it is, what to add, and what to leave alone, explained without the jargon.

What structured data actually is

Your web page is written for people. A human sees a phone number and knows it is a phone number. A machine sees a string of digits and has to work it out. Structured data is a layer of labelled code, usually in a format called JSON-LD, that says this is the telephone number, this is the address, this is the opening time.

Visitors never see it. Search engines and AI tools can read it, and it helps them avoid misreading your page.

Does it help you rank or get mentioned?

We want to be honest here. Structured data is not a ranking switch, and nobody can promise that adding it will lift you up the results or get you named by an assistant. What it does is reduce ambiguity. When your facts are labelled, there is less room for a crawler to attach the wrong address to the wrong business.

It can also make you eligible for richer displays in search, such as opening hours or star ratings in some cases. Those depend on the search engine, and they change.

The types that matter for local firms

You do not need dozens. For most service businesses in Chelmsford, Colchester or Southend, these cover nearly everything.

Getting the details right

The most common failure we see is mismatched data. The markup says one phone number while the footer shows another, or the opening hours changed last spring and nobody updated the code. Structured data must match what is visible on the page. If it does not, it can do more harm than having none.

Use the most specific business type available. A generic LocalBusiness label is better than nothing, but an Electrician label tells machines far more. Include your service area by naming the towns you cover, such as Basildon, Billericay and Brentwood, rather than leaving it blank.

How to add it without breaking things

If your site runs on WordPress, a reputable SEO plugin can output basic business markup from a settings screen. That is fine for a simple set-up. Check that the output reflects your real details, because default fields are often left half empty.

For more control, JSON-LD can be pasted into the page head by a developer. Whichever route you choose, test the result using Google's Rich Results Test and the Schema Markup Validator. Both are free and will flag syntax errors.

Avoid markup you do not deserve. Do not mark up reviews that are not on the page, and do not invent ratings. Search engines can penalise misleading markup, and it is simply dishonest.

Keeping it current

Structured data is not set and forget. Whenever you change your hours, move premises, add a service or swap a phone number, update the markup at the same time. We recommend a quarterly check, and it takes about fifteen minutes.

If you would rather have this handled as part of a wider search plan, it forms part of our local SEO work for Essex businesses.

The Bottom Line

Structured data is a set of labels that helps machines read your facts correctly. Add the few types that fit your business, keep them identical to what visitors see, test them, and revisit them when anything changes. It is modest work with modest, sensible benefits.
